Chapter 12

When Lila woke up, the room was dark and quiet. He wouldn’t leave without telling her. Then she heard running water and felt a moment of relief. She sat up and saw it: a glass of water and a pain pill. He was the sweetest guy. She quickly took the pill and headed for the shower.

As she was drying herself, she noticed she had a message on her phone. Darn! She had a doctor’s appointment this morning with her primary care doctor. She told Carter that as she poured a cup of coffee.

“Okay.” He gave her a once-over. “You’re looking perky this morning.”

“I am perky.” She gave him a long, lingering kiss. “But I’m mad, too, because you didn’t wake me up last night when you came to bed.”

“You needed the rest.”

She glanced at the bar. “Eggs? Where did we get eggs?”

“I bought them yesterday when I went grocery shopping. Eggs, toast and coffee.” He pulled out a bar stool. “Have a seat.”

“I don’t have long. My appointment’s at nine. I didn’t notice it until this morning, and Savon wants me to meet her for lunch to view new locations for my business.”

“I’ll go with you.”

“No. You’ll be bored sitting in a doctor’s office, and viewing vacant buildings.”

“Lila...”

“I’m fine, Carter.”

“Okay. I have some things I want to do this morning.” He told her about Rossini’s and Sapp’s mistresses.

“That’s odd. It could be very simple, though. If Rossini owns the club, he probably gets to choose the girls who work in there and probably shared some comments with Sapp.”

“It’s probably not that simple.”

She carried her plate and cup to the sink. “I’ve got to go and I’ll call you when I’m free.”

“Okay. Go ahead. I’ve got the dishes.”

She wanted to shout “I love you” but refrained from doing so. There was so much she wanted to say to him, but she had to choose her words wisely. Within the week, he would be leaving, and as she’d said so many times to herself, she had to be prepared and she had to be ready to handle the gallery fire. Carter was working very hard to solve it and she had faith in him.

At exactly nine o’clock, she walked into the doctor’s office and then waited forty-five minutes for him to see her. He cleaned her palm again and said everything looked great. He put very little gauze back on and mostly for protection. In a couple of days, she could take it off completely. She hurried to meet Savon. A Realtor showed them three places. The first two were lacking in size and the third one was very expensive. It once had been a jewelry store that had gone bankrupt. It had a big safe, which was on the plus side, and it would need very little renovation. It was in the updated North Center and Lila liked it, but she couldn’t afford it, especially since the insurance people were dragging their feet.

“What do you think?” Savon asked.

“It’s nice, but unaffordable for us.
